’Tis the Season for Board Networking

As we move into the holiday season, there is no better time to build the relationships that open doors to board opportunities. Every gathering, whether it is a corporate holiday party, a charity gala, or a neighborhood dinner, can become the start of a meaningful connection with someone who might help you secure your next board seat.

Be Prepared

That is why preparation matters. Have your board documents ready: your board résumé, your board bio, and your updated LinkedIn profile. Be clear on your elevator pitch, who you are, the experience you bring, and the value you add as a potential director. Confidence and competence are your calling cards.

Remember, this is a long game. Many of you bring 20, 30, even 40 years of experience as business owners, corporate executives, or managers. You already have the expertise and judgment boards need. The key is to be visible and ready when opportunity strikes.

Critical Action

At ACE, we emphasize three critical actions:

  1. Be prepared – your documents, messaging, and confidence.

  2. Build relationships – every conversation counts.

  3. Seek opportunities – both public and private company boards.

While the number of U.S. public companies has declined to around 4,000, the private market is flourishing. There are an estimated 25,000 private companies which could benefit from independent directors. Public company boards have now surpassed 30% women (a huge leap from a decade ago), but private companies lag behind, averaging only 4–11% women on boards.

That gap represents opportunity—your opportunity—to bring your insight, governance skills, and leadership to help private businesses thrive.

Attend and Follow Up

As we close the year, take advantage of the holiday calendar. Attend those events. Follow up with new contacts. Share what you are passionate about. Your future board seat might be sitting next to you at the next holiday reception. We need you in the boardroom.
