The AI Revolution Comes to the Boardroom
This has been the year of artificial intelligence, and the conversation is not slowing down.
Whether it is ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, or one of hundreds of emerging platforms, AI is reshaping how we work, make decisions, and lead. Also, when is AI not appropriate and people, rather than AI agents, critical to our success? And who determines that?
A Boards Knowledge of AI
AI is transforming how businesses operate, and by extension, how boards provide oversight. Every director today needs at least a working knowledge of AI systems, in order to ask the right questions.
Here are three areas where AI knowledge is essential for today’s boards:
Strategic Oversight: Understanding how management integrates AI into operations and decision-making.
Cybersecurity: Assessing whether data and systems are protected from infiltration and misuse.
Risk Management: Ensuring the company mitigates risks related to bias, misinformation, and data privacy.
AI on a Large Scale
Recently, I attended an event where the CEO of a multibillion-dollar corporation shared how she used Microsoft Copilot to help manage a corporate turnaround. In less than three years, she led her company to profitability, and she used AI as one of her tools to analyze data, uncover hidden assets, and refocus business priorities. Her story surprised me as I was not aware of the scope AI could have on the large scale. It was remarkable, and a clear sign of what is ahead.
Understanding the Risks
As directors and aspiring board members, we must understand what AI can do and where its risks lie. Boards oversee strategy and governance, and that includes ensuring management is using technology responsibly.
This technology is advancing rapidly. By the time you read this, there may be more new breakthroughs changing the conversation. The key is to stay curious and stay informed.
For me, AI is not just a tool, it is a strategic partner helping me achieve my mission: to help as many women as possible get on boards.
So, I will leave you with a question to ponder: What will you do with AI?
